One British school is finding that allowing children tolisten to music or even to have the TV on while studying ishelping to improve grades (成绩).Next time your teenagerprecipitates1 a family row (吵闹)by sprawling2 in anarmchair(扶手椅) listening to music while doing his homework, why not try a simple experiment? Rather than taking the heavy-handed(严厉的) line3 of ordering him to his bedroom to get on with it quietly, let him do the homework the way he wants(decibel4 levels permitting). You might well find that his essay is more sparkling(有文采的) than anything he's done before.
According to research at Millfield prep school (预备学校),around 20% of youngsters work best with background music, 10% excel(突出) when allowed to break up(终止)their work with short walks around the room while up to 80% can concentrate (集中注意力) better if allowed to fiddle (用手拨弄) with a small object.
The research has prompted (促使) the school to adopt a radical (彻底的)new approach, analysing pupils to discover which learning styles suit them best--then letting them do their work listening to music or even lying down. Sceptical(怀疑的) parents initially(最初的) regarded the move as a layabout's(懒散闲荡人的) charter5 but many are now applying it at home where children are also allowed to do their work with the television on.
"I prefer to work on the floor with music on low," confesses(承认) Sam, 13, a day-girl(走读女生). "At first my parents thought I was skiving6 but my teacher convinced them to look at my homework and when they saw it was okay, they agreed."
