Changes in the Research Interests in Distance Education in China:
Keywords Analysis of Distance Education Periodicals from 2000-2011
  Chen Yulin
This study, employing cluster analysis techniques, deals with the changes in the research interests in distance education in China through analyzing the articles in 5 distance education periodicals from 2000 to 2011. The results show that there have been some obvious changes in the field of distance education in China in the last decade. Put specifically, although the core research interests remain interesting, new research areas are drawing more and more attention with many peripheral research areas neglected or even disappearing. Ontological study of distance education and research into online courses remains to be the core research interests. Education informationization and IT literacy, which used to be top on the research agenda, have lost their attractiveness to researchers in the last few years. Online and distance education, lifelong learning and learning sciences are emerging research topics in the field.

Programs and Courses in Open University of China: Towards
  Building a Lifelong Learning System
  Kang Ping
This study aims to shed light on program development and course design for the Open University of China (OUC) by comparing programs and courses in some typical open universities worldwide. Several issues arise from the careful comparison. First, the mission of both international and national open universities is to provide equal access to higher education for in-service adults. Second, most international open universities provide multi-level higher education, from bachelor degree to PhD degree programs, and continuing education programs for short training, whereas open education programs in China are at the tertiary level, plus bachelor degree programs offered jointly by CRTVU and traditional higher education universities. Third, programs and courses vary greatly amongst these open universities, from flexible choices of disciplines to more generalized foundation courses. Last, course credits and program credits requirements also vary from institution to institution. Suggestions are made on designing and developing OUC programs and courses in the light of the research findings.

Learning Credit Bank in China: Developmental Issues

  Yang Chen
Three key aspects need to be dealt with carefully for the learning credit system in China, that is, concept, operation and obstacles. A learning credit bank is a third party accreditation institute for learning results, credit accumulation and transfer. Meanwhile, it is also an education management system established and abided by education providers of all levels. Measures are suggested for the development of learning credit bank in China. it is argued that emphasis should be laid upon social needs, accreditation parties, and accreditation and transfer mechanisms. Reforms and innovations should be carried out in terms of management modes, examination systems, teaching and credit systems, to promote lifelong learning. With the development of open education, educational management and operating model need to be reformed and innovated in order to accelerate a successful “flyover” between learning and achievements.

Student and Teacher Perspectives on Student-Teacher Interaction
  in Virtual Learning Community
Zhang Miaohua, Wu Lizhi and Liu Chunhua
With the rapid development of network technology, researchers and practitioners probe deeper into virtual learning community, and more attention is given to student-teacher interaction. This study, through questionnaires and analysis, focuses on the student-teacher interaction in a typical virtual learning community in a Modern Distance Education Pilot University. The results are as follows. First, the frequency of student-teacher interaction is low, neglecting the innate advantages of online interaction. Second, student-teacher interaction is more about learning and teaching activities although teachers expect more affective interaction and social interaction. In terms of modes of interaction, teachers prefer asynchronous interaction tools while students synchronous ones. Finally, in terms of interaction attitudes, both teachers and students believe they themselves are more active and the other party not, while some think neither party is active at all.

Development of Online Learning Interaction Platform Based on
  Cloud Operation System
Sun Chuanming, Lu Hong and Liao Longlong
New requirements and challenges present themselves in a cloud learning age, such as learning resources distribution and sharing easily available, convenient systems maintenance and upgrading, cost efficiency, reality-like virtual learning environments, etc. With careful analysis of the needs for online learning platforms for cloud learning, the authors designed an open, flexible and multifunctional learning platform based on an open source operation system. They also carried out profound study and exploration on the system framework, functionality and modules, technical implementation. This study can shed light on future upgrading of the existing platforms and development of new learning platforms.
