　　A and A指的是用and连接两个相同的词,它是英语中一种很有意思的结构,在阅读或考试中同学们经常可以见到,本文拟对这类结构的用法作一归纳和说明。
　　1. 连接两个相同的比较级,表示“越来越……”。如:
　　The weather is getting colder and colder. 天气越来越冷了。
　　Your English is getting better and better. 你的英语越来越好了。
　　注意more and more和less and less这两个搭配。如:
　　(1) more and more程度越来越深地,次数或数量越来越多的。如:
　　Computers are becoming more and more complicated. 计算机变得越来越复杂。
　　He is becoming more and more active in sports. 他越来越积极参加体育运动。
　　These days,more and more people are preferring to take early retirement. 近来,越来越多的人愿意早些退休。
　　(2) less and less程度越来越浅地,次数或数量越来越少的。如:
　　She found the job less and less attractive. 她发觉那工作越来越缺乏吸引力。
　　He played the piano less and less as he grew older. 他随着年龄的增长,弹钢琴的次数越来越少了。
　　There seems to be less and less time between each birthday and the next. 年年过生日,间隔的时间好像越来越短了。
　　2. 连接两个相同的动词,表示动作的反复或连续。如:
　　He coughed and coughed. 他咳个不停。
　　He tried and tried but without success. 他试了又试却未成功。
　　3. 当连接两个相同的副词时,以下两种用法值得注意:
　　(1) 表示动作的反复或连续,如on and on,over and over,again and again等。
　　He kept moaning on and on. 他呻吟不已。
　　He knocked at the door again and again: there was no answer. 他一再敲门,但无人应答。
　　The car skidded off the road and rolled over and over down the slope. 汽车滑出路面,打着滚翻下坡去了。
　　(2) 有时构成习语,有其特定的意思,如by and by(不久,马上)、through and through(完全,彻底)等。
　　They’ll be arriving by and by. 他们马上就要到达。
　　My mother is Irish through and through. 我母亲是地地道道的爱尔兰人。
　　4. 连接两个相同的名词,有以下两种主要用法:
　　(1) 表示“许多”。如:
　　They talked for hours and hours. 他们谈了很长很长时间。
　　The road went on for miles and miles. 这条路很长很长。
　　(2) 强调差别,意为“与……不同”。如:
　　Don’t worry―there are rules and rules. 别担心――规则跟规则不一样。
