Application of Ontology Technology in Distance Education: An Overview
  Chen Kun and Zhang Xiumei

With the rapid development of internet technology, how to provide internet users with immediate, personalized and effective services has become a pressing issue. As an effective conceptualization tool, ontology has drawn widespread attention in all fields, including distance education. Different applications of ontology technology are discussed, including personalized resources recommendation, which is already well- researched, self adaptive learning systems, and intelligent Q & A systems. It is believed that the former two focus on the personalized functions of the learning management systems, and have been widely used and made great achievements, while the latter one mainly realizes intelligent interaction of the systems, which is a difficult process and is still under test.

An Empirical Study on Integration of Mobile Technologies into
  Distance English Teaching Environment
  Yang Weiyan

In order to meet the diverse learning needs and provide a new teaching and learning environment for distance English learners with integrated use of modern mobile technologies, an experimental study is conducted on two pilot courses, CAI English 1 and CAI English 2 by using the mobile devices. The study focuses on the following issues: characteristics of distance English mobile learning (DEML), DEML cost feasibility, DEML teaching procedures and result, DEML environment, and the effectiveness of mobile technology support. The result shows that learners are hugely enthusiastic about the new mobile learning technology, willing to use it in their study, and their learning outcomes are significantly improved. This provides the ground for sharing and applying digital learning resources. The study also finds out that mobile learning is constantly in an open environment, where learners are easily distracted and cannot keep focused on the learning tasks. Hence, it is suggested that collaborative learning, discovery learning and self adaptive learning be adopted in the instructional design of DEML resources, and that teachers provide scaffolding support in DEML environment.

An Empirical Study on Integrated Design of Teaching and
Learning of an Distance English Course
Yang Yongjian, Liu Zhanrong and Cao Haiyan

Drawing on relative instructional theories, this study deals with the integrated design of teaching and learning of a Distance English Course, Integrated English, in the Radio and TV University system. Using qualitative analysis and content analysis, this study discusses the effectiveness of the design through data analysis, concept extraction and categorization. It also analyzes the relationship between the integrated design and learning resources, the significance of learners’ individual factors upon distance learning, and the indispensible roles of distance education institutes and tutors. Meanwhile, the authors analyze the reasons for the far-from-satisfactory usage of online learning resources, and suggestions are given so as to draw more attention to the design, development, application of and discussion about learning resources.

Designing an Online Course Based on Semantic Wiki
Li Yanyan, Wang Li and Liang Miao

Outstanding issues in most of the online courses in China are currently two-faceted: on the one hand, most attention is given to interface design and layout whereas the key component, the learning content itself, is not regularly updated, not flexibly organized, not used repeatedly enough, and short of semantic association and cross reference; on the other hand, students’ learning remains at merely browsing the materials and simple interaction, without contributing to creating the learning materials, with low motivation and unsatisfactory learning result. An open, flexible and extendable web course design principle is adopted in a case study based on web 2.0, with emphasis on everybody-contributes, cross-referencing and sharing. The results show that online courses based on semantic Wiki can strengthen both teacher-to-student and student-to-student collaboration and interaction, enhancing students’ learning collaborative learning consciousness, hence, to a certain extent, improving learning effectiveness.

Use of Video in Multimedia Packages for Pre-Post Technical Staff Training
  Hou Tao and Jin Xin

Pre-post training takes up a great proportion of staff training resources due to high mobility of technical workers. This study focuses on the effectiveness of using video in multimedia packages for pre-post technical staff training, taking a manufacturing enterprise in Beijing as the case. It is found out that trainees’ performances and their satisfaction are significantly improved using the videos in training. This study also deals with such issues as production procedures and strategies of the videos, suitability, standards and spontaneous creativity in the design and implementation of the videos.
