Other than和rather than这两个短语在高中教材里多次出现，然而很多学生不会使用，下面谈谈他们的习惯用法。
一、other than除了…；除…之外(常用于否定结构中)
1．常起介词作用，相当于except，but，后跟名词、代词、动名词做宾语，表示例外，在句子中作状语。
例如：
There's nobody here other than me．除了我这里没别人。
I have not studied foreign languages other than English．除了英语外，我没学过其他外语。
She has no close friends other than him．她除了他以外没有好朋友。
2．有时起连词作用，后接形容词、副词、介词短语、动词不定式和从句。
例如：
(1)接形容词She seldom appears other than happy．她总是看起来很幸福。
(2)接副词)At no time did he play other than magnificently．他在任何时候都演奏的极好。
(3)接介词短语You can’t get there other than by swimming．你只有游泳才能到达那里。
(4)接不定式He never speaks to me other than to ask forsomething．他除了向我要东西，从不跟我说话。
other than与but的用法一样，若前面无动词do，does，did，须接带to的不定式，若前面有do，does，did，须接不带to的不定式。
In that case．there is nothing you can do other than wait．
I have done nothing other than send for the policeman．
(5)接从句The cooking had no fault other than that the peaswere overdone．除了豌豆烧过了头以外．这烹调没什么可挑剔的
(6)no other than正是，就是This is no other than my oldfriend．John．这位不是别人．正是我的老朋友约翰
二、rather than
rather than是一个并列连词，连接两个同等成分，否定后者，肯定前者，意为“而不”。
(1)连接两个名词或代词
He is an explorer rather than a sailor．他是一个探险者而不是一个海员。
You rather than I are going to g0 camping．是你而不是我要去要野营。
注意：rather than连接两个名词或代词作主语时．谓语动词应与rather than前面的名词或代词在人称和数上保持一致。
(2)连接两个形容词
The sweater she bought was beautiful rather than cheap．与其说她买的这件羊毛衫便宜不如说它漂亮。
(3)连接两个介词(短语)或动名词
We will have the meeting in the classroom rather than in thegreat hall．我们是在教室里开会，而不是在大厅里。
She enjoys singing rather than dancing．她喜欢唱歌．而不喜欢跳舞。
(4)连接两个分句
We should help him rather than he should help us．是我们应该帮助他而不是他应该帮助我们。
(5)连接两个不定式
I decided to write rather than(10)telephone．我决定写信而不打电话。
注意：rather than后接不定式时，不定式可以带to，也可以不带to，如上句。但rather than位于句首时，则只能接不带to的不定式。
如：Rather than allow the vegetables to go bad，he sold them athalf price．他唯恐蔬菜烂掉，把它们以半价卖掉了。
(6)连接两个动词
He ran rather than walked．他是跑来的，而不是走来的。
注意：这里rather than后用了walked，而没有用walk，表示客观事实，而不是主观愿望。
如果换成walk，则作“宁愿……而不愿……”解。
注：rather than与would连用时．构成“would rather…than…”句式或者would…rather than，意思是“宁愿……而不愿……”．表示主观愿望，即在两者之中选择其一。
例如：
She'd rather die than lose the children．她宁愿死也不愿失去孩子们。
She would die rather than 1nse the children
